Welcome to the Summer Issue of Community Matters!
As we begin to ramp up for our new 2008 United Way Toronto Campaign, I am proud of how much we have accomplished and the many "new" things we have to celebrate. In this issue you will have the opportunity to read about quite a few of them. For example, in 2007 we welcomed a new agency into the United Way network, Access Alliance Multicultural Health and Community Services. Access Alliance provides vital services to newcomers and their families, helping them settle into life in their new country and realize their dreams for a better tomorrow.
This past spring we launched a new Days of Caring pilot project, which took a different and more focused approach. This initiative was informed by the United Way Community Impact Strategy, which identifies new partnerships as the only way to tackle the complex problems of our neighbourhoods. It takes the whole community working together to change social conditions. By working together, by mobilizing people and resources, we can address the root causes of our city's shared challenges. We can lift whole communities and create new opportunities for people and for neighbourhoods.
Two new social purpose enterprises were established this past year, joining the nine others that are supported by the Toronto Enterprise Fund. These enterprises provide employment opportunities, work experience, on the job training, and additional income to homeless adults and at-risk youth. Armed with new skills, enhanced self confidence and better connections to the community and the labour force, participants truly get a new lease on life.
And there’s more: there are new donors, new volunteers and new workplace partners to salute. All of which makes me look forward to the months ahead, to a renewed spirit of commitment and dedication, to working with our new Campaign Chair, Bill MacKinnon, Chief Executive Officer, KPMG LLP, and his Campaign Cabinet and to reaching out once again to the generous people of our great city. Together, we can, indeed, make a difference every single day.

Making a difference every single day
The 2007 United Way Campaign raised an historic $108.1 million for our community. Torontonians worked tirelessly, gave generously, and demonstrated their profound commitment to the notion that when we come together as one, everything is possible.
The priorities of neighbourhoods, newcomers and youth continue to guide our efforts. Learn more about United Way's investment in our community and about our newest member agency, Access Alliance.

A New Days of Caring Pilot Initiative
On April 29th, they turned off their cellphones and BlackBerrys and left their laptops and briefcases behind. And then they hit the road. "They" were some 125 employees representing ten corporate partners and they were participating in a pilot project of United Way Toronto’s Days of Caring program.
'I dream of a future that could exist.'
Poetic in their simplicity, these words speak volumes about hope - about daring to hope - and the sheer possibility of a better life. They are the words of a young person who works at the Phoenix Print Shop, a social purpose enterprise funded by the Toronto Enterprise Fund.
86% of the participants who completed the training and work experience in linking businesses have found full or part-time jobs, started their own businesses or returned to school.
