Leadership giving

This program recognizes the vital importance of personal giving. Increasing your support to $1,000 or more will go even further to help people in real need.

Leadership donors are recognized each year in our Honour Roll. Tax benefits, of course, make it easier to be generous.

Making a Gift of Securities

Donations of securities allow you to help support your community and receive a significant tax credit. The benefits of donating a gift of securities to United Way are two-fold. First, you will receive a tax receipt for the fair market value of the donation in the amount of the closing trading price on the day United Way receives the security. Second, your donation is exempt from the capital gains tax that typically applies to the sale of a security.

United Way Toronto has been handling gifts of securities since 1997. We have developed an effective process that is designed to be easy for donors. In addition, we have relationships with all of the major brokerages in Toronto.

United Way accepts donations of publicly traded securities, which Canada Revenue Agency defines as follows:

  • Shares listed on most Canadian and certain foreign stock exchanges
  • Exchangeable shares
  • Prescribed debt obligations
  • Shares of the capital stock of a Canadian public mutual fund corporation
  • Units of widely held Canadian mutual fund trusts
  • Interest in related segregated fund trusts
